Curriculum

Master of Project Management (30 credits)

The online master of project management degree is an interdisciplinary, 30-credit graduate program that uses problem-based learning to provide a thorough understanding of all aspects of project management theory and practice. Embedded in the program is a 12-credit graduate certificate program.

Based on the Real Needs of Multinational Corporations

The project management program is designed to meet the needs of companies that are heavily engaged in large-scale projects. Penn State's team of faculty, headed by Dr. Jeffrey K. Pinto, an internationally recognized scholar in the field of project management, has joined forces with 2 distinguished, multinational firms—Rolls-Royce and AMEC—and the University of Manchester to develop a world-class curriculum for companies that require the highest level of expertise in the management of projects.

The program focuses on the following key themes:

  • planning, cost, and value management
  • project control
  • human issues in project management
  • strategic issues in project management
  • commercial and procurement law

The master's degree curriculum includes a 6-credit research project based on a current project management issue in your organization, which allows you to put what you learn into practice immediately.

The program is structured so that students maintain contact with each other both while involved in the program and after their graduation. An optional 2-day residential event at the beginning of the fall semester will provide you with additional opportunities to network with colleagues and interact with the program's faculty.

Graduate Certificate in Project Management (12 credits)

You have the option of completing the graduate certificate in project management as professional development or as a step toward the master's degree. The admissions process is the same as for the master's degree program and requires that you submit a complete application portfolio. To earn the graduate certificate, you must complete 12 of the 30 credits of course work required for the master's degree. All students must begin with MANGT 510. To learn more about this option, visit the graduate certificate Web site.
