Learn How to Become a Professional Ski and Snowboard Instructor

Study the fundamentals of snowsports instruction — people, teaching, and technical skills — to prepare to teach beginner skiers and snowboarders.
Prepare for and complete your PSIA-AASI Level I Instructor certification in alpine skiing, snowboarding, telemark skiing, or cross-country skiing.
Learn leadership responsibilities and skills associated with working at ski resorts and in winter environments.
Develop an understanding of leisure and the role it plays in people’s lives.
Demonstrate knowledge of different parts of the snowsports industry and the ways in which they complement each other to enhance the guest experience.

This 9-credit program is a well-rounded learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, ultimately helping you prepare to teach beginners in snowsports with a focus on safety, inspiration, and enjoyment.

Leadership Development in Snowsports develops students' understanding and skills in becoming a Snowsports industry professional.

Snowsports Education is designed to guide students to become a certified snowsports educator. Students will need to join PSIA-AASI and pay for their level I assessment in addition to tuition fees.

Learn about this program's tuition, fees, scholarship opportunities, grants, payment options, and military benefits.

Students in the professional snowsports education program will also be required to join PSIA-AASI and pay for the Level 1 assessment event, which occurs at different snowsports resorts.

Undergraduate Tuition

Undergraduate tuition is calculated based on the number of credits for which you register and the number of total credits you have accrued at or transferred to Penn State.

Tuition is due shortly after each semester begins and rates are assessed every semester of enrollment.

Tuition rates for the fall 2023, spring 2024, and summer 2024 semesters.

Undergraduate students taking more than 19 credits will be charged the flat tuition rate plus the regular per credit hour rate for each credit above 19.

Paying for Your Certificate

Students pursuing a certificate are considered "nondegree," a status that is not eligible for federal student aid, including the Federal Direct Stafford Loan program. A private alternative loan may be an option to consider.

Additionally, Penn State offers many ways to pay for your education, including an installment plan and third-party payments. Penn State World Campus also offers an Employer Reimbursement and Tuition Deferment Plan. Learn more about the options for paying for your education.

Students pursuing a degree and meeting all other eligibility requirements may qualify for financial aid.

Financial Aid and Military Benefits

Some students may qualify for financial aid. Take the time to research financial aid, scholarships, and payment options as you prepare to apply. Military service members, veterans, and their spouses or dependents should explore these potential military education benefits and financial aid opportunities, as well.

Who Should Apply?

Those wanting to build a career in snowsports education — including snowsports enthusiasts, new instructors, and uncertified instructors who are seeking an education to support their advancement in the industry — are encouraged to apply. Students in the program are expected to have a relationship with a local snowsports area.

Earn Your Level I Snowsports Instructor Certification

Earn your certificate at a snowsports area near you. The online certificate program allows you to earn 9 credits and your PSIA-AASI Level I certification anywhere in the United States, giving you the opportunity to integrate your online learning experience with your professional development as a snowsports instructor at a snowsports area near you.

Whether you are looking to finish your program as quickly as possible or balance your studies with your busy life, Penn State World Campus can help you achieve your education goals. Many students take one or two courses per semester.

Our online courses typically follow a 12- to 15-week semester cycle, and there are three semesters per year (spring, summer, and fall). If you plan to take a heavy course load, you should expect your course work to be your primary focus and discuss your schedule with your academic adviser.

Steps to Apply

To apply for this program, you must be a high school graduate, or have completed your GED.
After completing your application, you will be asked to provide more information about your snowsports experience and plans.
At which snowsports area will you be working or volunteering this season?
In which skiing or riding discipline (e.g., alpine, snowboard, cross country, or telemark) do you have experience, and how would you describe your ability? What kinds of runs can you comfortably complete?
Which assessment do you intend to take (resort and dates)? Note that you can search for assessments on the Professional Ski Instructors of America and American Association of Snowboard Instructors website.
