Master of Professional Studies in Applied Demography Webinar
Join Dr. Nicolas Sacco and Dr. Stephen Matthews of the graduate certificate and MPS programs in applied demography, for a one-hour webinar to learn how these programs can help you master the skills in demography needed to enhance your career. Some of the learning outcomes for the degree, including the ability to:
- demonstrate technical competence in demographic methods
- use GIS data to answer population questions
- identify and use demographic data sources
- address the immediate questions and planning objectives of managers, administrators, and government officials by examining case studies of how to use demographic science
- incorporate advanced geo-demographic analysis, big data, and applied statistical methods in your line of work
You will also learn how you can enter the program by taking only a single course that could later apply to either the certificate or the MPS.
Dr. Stephen Matthews
Faculty Director, Graduate Programs in Applied Demography
Dr. Matthews is trained in quantitative geography, GIS, and planning and is the Liberal Arts Professor of Sociology, Anthropology, and Demography (with courtesy appointments in Geography and the School of International Affairs). Since 2013 Dr. Matthews has served as director of the residential dual-degree Graduate Program in Demography (60+ students) and he has been actively involved in the APDEM programs since they were launched in 2016. He has been at Penn State since 1994, during which time he founded and led the Geographic Information Analysis Core within the Population Research Institute. Matthews has been co-editor of the flagship journal, Demography (2016-2019), and is currently the editor of the journal Spatial Demography. At Penn State, he has served on the advisory board to Penn State’s MGIS and Certificate Programs in GIS, and he is a regular capstone supervisor for the MGIS and APDEM programs.

Assistant Teaching Professor of Sociology and Demography and Program Coordinator, Graduate Studies in Applied Demography (APDEM), Department of Sociology and Criminology at The Pennsylvania State University. Former Postdoctoral Scholar at The Population Research Institute (PRI) (2018-19) and at the Center for Development and Regional Planning (CEDEPLAR)-Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil (2017-18). He conducted research projects based at the Population Studies Center (CENEP) of Argentina.
