After 15 years in the restaurant industry, Aja Cramer wanted more than long hours and missed family time. She wanted a career that aligned with her creativity — without uprooting her life. Thanks to Penn State World Campus, she made it happen.
A career pivot that started with flexibility
Aja loved her work in hospitality, but the schedule left little room for her personal life. When she transitioned to a new job with a tourism organization in Pennsylvania, she finally had time to explore her passion for design.
“I knew I needed a program flexible enough to let me keep working full-time while staying present in my life,” Cramer said.
Penn State World Campus offered exactly that.
Choosing digital multimedia design
Cramer enrolled in the digital multimedia design bachelor’s program, a degree that combines creativity with technical skills.
“Technology has advanced so much since I first studied graphic design years ago,” she said. “These courses rebuilt my confidence and brought my skills up to date.” With transfer credits and summer courses, she completed her degree in about three years, on her own schedule.
Applying new skills to strengthen local business
Today, as membership manager for the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board in Pennsylvania, Cramer uses her design and digital communication expertise to help local businesses thrive.
“Design and user experience are becoming increasingly important for how destinations reach their audiences,” she said. “My hope is to elevate marketing tools and storytelling that support Pennsylvania’s hospitality industry.”
Why online learning worked
For Cramer, the ability to earn her degree without relocating was essential.
“If I had needed to attend traditional in-person classes, it simply wouldn’t have been possible,” she said. “Penn State World Campus made going back to school feel realistic and attainable.”
Her advice to prospective students
“If you’re determined to make a change, World Campus gives you the flexibility to do it without sacrificing your career or personal life,” Aja said. “It’s an investment in yourself — and in your community.”
