REQUIRED COURSES (15 credits)
EDLDR 560 Principles of Instructional Supervision
Social and institutional settings for instructional supervision; functions, activities, and practices of supervision; supervisory case studies.

SPLED 498 Long Implementing Evidence-based Reading Applications in Special Education
How to develop, implement, and evaluate an evidence-based reading instruction system for special education.

SPLED 501 Administration and Supervision of Educational Programs for Exceptional Children
Problems connected with the instituting and organizing of classes for atypical children; the legal phases, finances, teaching personnel, pupil personnel, housing, equipment, courses of study, curriculum, etc.

This course may constitute up to 135 hours of the PDE requirement for 360 hours of field experience.

SPLED 595C Internship in Special Education Supervision
Supervised by faculty or approved mentor, students will perform functions required of special education supervisors in LEAs, private schools, or intermediate units. Requirements include: job shadowing, self-evaluation and improvement plans, clinical supervision of a peer and development, implementation and evaluation of a staff development episode. Permission is required from an authorized administrator to perform activities on site.

The internship constitutes 135 hours of the PDE requirement for 360 hours of field experience.

SPLED 596 Individual Studies
This course provides additional field experience opportunities for supervisory students to enable them to meet the PDE requirement for a total of 360 hours of field experiences. Students will investigate budget practices in their schools and develop a systematic program evaluation plan for an existing program. This course constitutes 135 hours of the PDE requirement for 360 hours of field experience.

Exit Requirements for Pennsylvania Department of Education Certification as a Supervisor of Special Education

  1. Praxis Examination Number 0411 or 5411 (computerized version) — Education Leadership: Administration and Supervision, current score requirement: 143.
  2. Completion of all required and elective supervisory certification course requirements listed above
  3. Completion of five years of special education teaching experience
  4. Demonstration of PDE-specified competencies in core courses (evidenced by grades of B or better in all courses)
  5. Completion of 360 hours of field experiences (see course descriptions)

Upon satisfactory completion of this coursework and internship, attainment and verification of five years of professional school experience in special education, and satisfactory achievement on assessments prescribed by PDE (currently Praxis test 0411 or 5411), students will be recommended for PDE certification as a supervisor of special education by the dean of the Penn State College of Education.
