Course Description

Theory and practice of cartographic design emphasizing effective visual thinking and visual communication with geographic information systems.

Strong writing skills are recommended for this course. If English is not your native language, it is important that you read additional information regarding English language proficiency before registering for this course.

Remarks

Geography 486 is one of the elective courses students may choose as their final course in the Certificate Program in Geographic Information Systems. It is also an elective for students in the Penn State Master of GIS degree program. It consists of five projects and a capstone assignment. Each project includes readings, quizzes, and discussions about concepts and tools in cartography and visualization. Students who successfully complete the course are able to design and produce effective reference and thematic maps using GIS software, can create and analyze workflows, and can interpret and critique maps and related information graphics verbally. Geography 486 requires use of ESRI's ArcView software.
