Course Description

An introduction to the design and statistical analysis of randomized and observational studies in biomedical research.

Strong writing skills are recommended for this course. If English is not your native language, it is important that you read additional information regarding English language proficiency before registering for this course.

Remarks

Students are strongly recommended to have access to a PC in order to use the required software. This is a graduate-level survey course that stresses the concepts of statistical design and analysis in biomedical research, with special emphasis on clinical trials. SAS for Windows statistical software will be used throughout the course for data analysis. For students who plan to graduate this semester, please communicate your intent to graduate to your instructor. This will alert your instructor to the need to submit your final grade in time to meet the published graduation deadlines.

Software Requirements

Requires: Students will need to have Microsoft Word 2003 or higher and SAS 9.1.3, 9.2 or 9.3 to complete the requirements of this course. SAS 9.1.3 will NOT run on Windows 95, 98, or ME. Students will need to upgrade to the PROFESSIONAL version. If you do not have Microsoft Word you can purchase the latest version through Journey Ed (www.journeyed.com) or a vendor of your choice. Students may purchase SAS through the Penn State Computer Store at http://computerstore.psu.edu for approximately $30. Students will need to have their nine-digit PSU ID to purchase SAS.
