Remarks
The GIS program requires the use of the Windows operating system. This course serves as an orientation to the study of geographic information systems and is the first in a series of four courses that leads to Penn State's Certificate of Achievement in Geographic Information Systems as well as the Master of Geographic Information Systems degree program. The course consists of readings, quizzes, projects, and discussions about fundamental concepts of geographic information science. It provides a comprehensive overview of geographic information technologies, including the map projections, coordinate systems, global positioning system, land surveys, aerial surveys and photogrammetry, topographic mapping, social surveys such as the U.S. Census, and satellite remote sensing. Students who successfully complete the course are able to specify the characteristics of geographic data needed to perform common GIS tasks, determine whether the required data are available, and recognize the technology required to produce data needed for particular tasks. Students also learn skills required to participate effectively in an online class.Schedule This Course
