Course Description

A web-centric look at the latest techniques and practices in computer security as they apply to the Internet.

Strong writing skills are recommended for this course. If English is not your native language, it is important that you read additional information regarding English language proficiency before registering for this course.

CSE 543 or IST 515

Remarks

This course provides a web-centric look at the latest techniques and practices in computer security. This 3-credit course focus on 1) a practical guide to discovering and exploiting security flaws in web applications, 2) a comprehensive discussion of defending and preventing mechanisms to protect web-centric information assets, and 3) an introductory use of a list of commercial-free security testing toolkits. An easy-to-understand and step-by-step approach enhanced through active and collaborative learning is the teaching/learning method adopted in this course. Online discussion and hands-on project assignments will be used to help student learn the subject incrementally and effectively. During each week, students will be asked to participate in online discussions, focusing on the topics discussed in the week. Minimum 2 postings are required in the week; in addition, a hands-on project (which will be individual or group based) is required.


This course is part of a cohort program and is only available to students accepted into the Master of Software Engineering program - cohort 4.

Requires: A desktop/laptop computer with at least 2 GB of RAM and at least 6 GB of free disk space is necessary. Windows 7 or XP is necessary.

Software Requirements

Requires: No specific software is required before class. However, students will be asked to install their own local websites (e.g., Webgoat, Hacme Books) and security testing toolkits (e.g., Paros, Burp suite, WebScarab). An installation of Java Runtime Environment (Java 6) is a must.
