Course Description

Advanced topics in GIS customization, including the Systems Development Life Cycle, packaging and deployment, and consuming Web services.

Strong writing skills are recommended for this course. If English is not your native language, it is important that you read additional information regarding English language proficiency before registering for this course.

Remarks

GEOG 489 is an elective course for Penn State's Online Master of GIS. The focus of the course is automating repetive GIS tasks and customizing the interface of ArcGIS desktop software with VB.NET programming language. The course consists of 4 projects and a final capstone assignment. Students also learn the basics of the Software Development Life Cycle while completing their final projects. While no previous programming experience is assumed, students will benefit from prior programming experience. GEOG 489 requires the use of ESRI ArcGIS 10.1 and Visual Studio development environment.

Software Requirements

Requires: Work in this course requires the ArcGIS 10.1 Desktop software products. Details on acquiring an educational software license can be found at https://gis.e-education.psu.edu/gis/faq#esri . The course requires the ArcGIS SDK for .NET Framework found on the DVD version of ArcGIS 10.1. The course also requires use of Visual Studio 2010 Professional or Visual Basic 2010 Express. If you have questions regarding the software, please contact the instructor.
