Course Description
Customizing GIS software to extend its built-in functionality and to automate repetitive tasks.
Strong writing skills are recommended for this course. If English is not your native language, it is important that you read additional information regarding English language proficiency before registering for this course.
Prerequisites
GEOG 363 or GEOG 484; CMPSC101 or equivalent

Remarks
Geography 485 is one of the elective courses students may choose as their final course in the Certificate Program in Geographic Information Systems. It is also an elective for students in the Penn State Master of GIS degree program. The focus of the course is on geoprocessing automation within ESRI's ArcGIS desktop software environment by writing scripts in the Python programming language. While no previous programming experience is assumed, students in GEOG 485 will benefit from prior programming experience. Students who successfully complete the course are able to automate workflows and repetitive GIS tasks both graphically using Model Builder and programmatically using Python. Geography 485 requires use of ESRI's ArcView software.CMPSC 101 prerequisite is waived
