Writing Social Commentary Certificate Program (21 credits)

 

REQUIRED COURSES (12 credits)

ENGL 015 (GWS)

Rhetoric and Composition
Instruction and practice in writing expository prose that shows sensitivity to audience and purpose.

Prerequisite: ENGL 004 or satisfactory performance on the English proficiency examination

ENGL 050 (GA)

Introduction to Creative Writing
Practice and criticism in the reading, analysis, and composition of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry writing.

3 credits
ENGL 202A (GWS)

Effective Writing: Writing in the Social Sciences
Instruction in writing persuasive arguments about significant issues in the social sciences. (A student may take only one of the following courses for credit: ENGL 202A, 202B, 202C, or 202D.)

Prerequisites: ENGL 015 or ENGL 030; fourth-semester standing

ENGL 215

Introduction to Article Writing
Written exercises in, and a study of, the principles of article writing; practice in the writing of specific articles. This course deals with the following: writing the popular magazine article--generating ideas, drafting queries, researching, interviewing, organizing, preparing articles, and submitting them for publication.

Prerequisite: ENGL 015 or ENGL 030

Critical Thinking
Discussion of the validity, soundness, and fallacies of everyday language use and reasoning; informal logic; and manipulative arguments and propaganda.

Introduction to Ethics
Ethical theory about virtue, duty, autonomy, and life quality applied to moral problems, including character, violence, oppression, abortion, and suicide.

Prerequisite: ENGL 015 or ENGL 030
