Rebecca Funk Online Testimonial

"The World Campus gave me the flexibility I required ... I completed my ECON 4 while living in New York City, Tokyo, and Sydney."

--Rebecca Funk

Penn State Student, Rebecca Funk

In the fall of 2001, when Rebecca Funk entered her first semester at Penn State's University Park campus, she intended to graduate from the Smeal College of Business as a Schreyer scholar—in the usual four years. But during Funk's first semester, her plans shifted radically when she was offered a modeling contract with one of New York City's top five modeling agencies. It was the offer of a lifetime. But in order to take it, Funk needed to do some serious traveling.

"It was a hard decision, but I chose to take a leave of absence from Penn State," she says. "In January of 2002 I moved to the city."

As Funk became more involved in her new career, she began to miss taking classes. "The lack of intellectual stimulation was unbearable," she recalls, "and I decided to enroll in distance education.  I knew I would eventually return to school, and if I could earn a few credits while traveling, [I thought] I might as well."

To keep up with her studies, Funk enrolled in classes through Penn State World Campus.

"Penn State World Campus was my first choice because I intended on returning there at some point to finish my undergraduate studies," she says. "Also, the World Campus gave me the flexibility I required. I was frequently traveling and did not always have access to a computer. I completed my ECON 4 while living in New York City, Tokyo, and Sydney."

In January of 2004, Funk returned from her global travels to resume traditional classes at Penn State's University Park campus. Because of the credits she earned while modeling (completing "a lot of work on airplanes and in makeup chairs"), she was able to return as a sophomore.

"It took me only one semester to complete the rest of my entrance requirements," says Funk, "and next year I will be a junior. Although I took two years off from school, I am only one year behind the students I started with in fall 2001."

Expecting to graduate in 2006, Funk plans to go on to study philosophy in graduate school.
