John Mills

Military adviser

Prior to coming to Penn State, John worked at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota, where he was assigned to Student Support Services and the Center of American Indian Studies. John started his educational career with teaching special education classes at Rapid City Central High School.

In addition, he served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army. His duty stations included the 555th M.P. Company out of Fort Lee, Virginia, and the 564th M.P. Company out of Butzbach, West Germany.

John received a bachelor's degree in elementary education and special education from Black Hills State University and a master's degree in counseling and human resource development (with an emphasis in college student personnel) from South Dakota State University.

In 2002, John relocated to central Pennsylvania to work on a Ph.D. in educational leadership in Penn State’s College of Education. Most of his evenings and weekends are currently spent working on his dissertation. To relax, he enjoys watching baseball, football, and basketball, and fly-fishing in the local region’s rivers.

John is a member of the Ogallala Lakota Tribe of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota.
