Dante DeAntonio Online Testimonial

"As long as you are willing to do the work and stay on top of it, taking an online class is definitely a good idea for anyone."

--Dante DeAntonio

Penn State Student, Dante DeAntonio

In his junior year, after taking all the chemistry classes his small high school had to offer, Dante DeAntonio was looking for his next educational challenge. He found that challenge at Penn State Online. DeAntonio took CHEM 012 Chemical Principles online during his senior year of high school. Now an undergraduate student at the University Park campus, he says the experience he gained in that course made his transition to college and to the daunting biochemistry major much easier. "The class was a good lesson in self-motivation. I had to force myself to get all of the work in on time while still taking my high school classes," he explains.

Taking the Penn State Online course in high school also gave DeAntonio some extra room in his schedule this year and allowed him to get a jump start on his General Education requirements. "I knew that I would have enough to worry about during my first semester of college with moving away from home and trying to meet new friends. With the extra class under my belt, I didn't have as much to worry about academically. I was able to free up some room in my schedule and take an extra Gen Ed class."

DeAntonio, under the direction of Schuylkill Valley High School academic enrichment coordinator Steve Schell, spent one class period per day working on his college course work. The school district paid for the class because it did not offer Advanced Placement chemistry for earning college credit in the subject. Like his adult learner counterparts, DeAntonio had to juggle academics with outside activities, including the Pennsylvania Youth Educators Association and the Science Olympiad. "It was tough balancing everything at times, but I'm glad I did it and I feel I am much better at time management now because of it," he says.

DeAntonio is considering taking additional Penn State Online courses to help him earn the economics minor he is now pursuing along with a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry. He hopes to one day attend medical school, but is currently unsure of where the future will ultimately lead him. He recommends Penn State Online to any persons looking to further their education: "As long as you are willing to do the work and stay on top of it, taking an online class is definitely a good idea for anyone."
