In this program you have the choice between the treatment and the prevention track. The study of treatment includes courses in counseling addicted clients and the practice of dual diagnosis. Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management—Enrolling in one of the 11- to 13-credit hotel, restaurant, and institutional management professional development programs gives you control of your learning experience. Three of the HRIM professional development certificate programs are organized around particular sectors of the hospitality industry: restaurant and food service, lodging and hotel, and institutional. The fourth explores hospitality management as a career option. Students can complete three courses to earn a Professional Development Certificate. By taking one course every four months, a student can complete a certificate in twelve months. Labor Studies and Employment Relations—The certificate in labor studies and employment relations program provides a foundation in industrial relations, including law, policy, and practices. The program will enable you to gain an understanding of workplace and employment issues from both the employee and employer perspective, apply credits earned to an associate or bachelor's degree, and take courses at a distance through the World Campus and/or in resident instruction at Penn State's University Park campus. Popular Music—This course examines the roots, development, and significance of popular music in our culture. It covers the origin of popular music in the early nineteenth century and introduces the major genres of the art: blues, jazz, country, mainstream pop, and rock and roll. The thrust of the course is sociological and cultural rather than musicological and will trace the music's development in a historical context. The intent of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of popular music, the significance of major artists in its development, and its importance in our social and cultural history. Paying for Your Education—Pursuing additional education is a great investment in your future. A recent Bureau of Labor Statistics study found that the median weekly earnings of workers with a bachelor's degree are 62 percent higher than workers without a bachelor's degree.
