The School Nutrition Association (SNA) Level 3 certification module is designed for school food service or child nutrition operation employees who are interested in:
- broadening their job opportunities
- preparing for supervisory responsibilities
Students can expand their knowledge and skills in management, nutrition, and food service operations. Completing this module prepares students to qualify for SNA Level 3 certification and can be a step-up to Penn State's certificate program in school food service management and the associate degree in dietetic food systems management, with a school food service emphasis.
Is It Right for Me?
The SNA Level 3 certification module is designed for the motivated, self-disciplined student who has school food service work experience. Distance education students who study 6 to 10 hours weekly should be able to successfully complete 4 to 5 courses in a year, and the module in less than a year.
How Does the Program Work?
The courses are organized around instructional study guides with textbook readings, along with Web-based enhancements, such as online quizzes, bulletin boards, communication tools, lesson submission forms, and other resources. Students will need access to a computer and to the Internet. Most 3-credit courses include an average of 18 lessons: 16 content lessons and 2 proctored exams.
A computer is not required for admission to the program; however, students will need access to a computer and to the Internet. We recommend using one for preparing written assignments and accessing Web-enhanced courses.
What Can I Learn?
The SNA Level 3 certification module covers:
- history and overview of school food service program management
- basic nutrition principles and implementing dietary guidelines
- ensuring food safety using HACCP processes
- supervision and training of food service employees
