  • an overview of reading fundamentals and foundations, including instruction using normative and curriculum-based measurement, phonics, and vocabulary development
  • assessing reading skills, specifically in the areas of fluency, comprehension, and writing and spelling
  • teaching functional reading skills, reading for vocational competence; sensory and communication impairments
  • improving student achievement; highlighting effective instructional intervention strategies and reading programs for use with students receiving special education services

Program Format

Penn State's reading instruction for special education program includes 3 distance education courses. They are offered via DVD and customized course materials and supplemental online activities. The courses are designed so that you can complete the work from your home or office, making the program convenient and accessible for you as a working professional. Communication and interaction with instructors is maintained mainly through e-mail and Web-based message boards.

Students will begin or end the program with the PaTTAN Summer Institute: A Focus on Improving Student Achievement through Effective Practices. Students who wish to earn the RISE certificate must attend this conference and register for 3 graduate credits following the Reading: Grades 4-12 Strand. To earn the 3 credits, attendance at all designated conference sessions plus satisfactory completion of assigned projects and/or exams will be required.
