The master of engineering degree in oil and gas engineering management is a 33-credit program of study, divided into 3 segments. By taking 4 courses each year, one course at a time, you can complete this 33-credit program in just 3 years. To earn this degree, you must successfully complete:

Segment One (focused areas):

  • 9 or more core course credits
  • 15 internship and/or individualized studies credits

Segment Two (common courses):

  • 6 prescribed course credits

Segment Three (research topics):

  • 3 engineering report credits

Segment One

Choose courses from among 4 focused areas of study: reservoir engineering, gas transmission processing, porous media flow dynamics, or production engineering. At least 21 of your 24 required credits from segment one must be chosen from the same area.

Segment Two

Take 2 prescribed 3-credit courses common to all students in the degree program, focusing on current research in the field of oil and gas production, and quantitative analysis of risk associated with oil and gas exploration and production investment.

Segment Three

Complete a 3-credit capstone engineering project, based on a research topic selected by you and your committee. This component of the program requires face-to-face interaction with your faculty adviser during a 2-month residency at Penn State's University Park campus. For ease of scheduling, the residency requirement may be completed in 2 separate one-month segments, with the agreement of the faculty adviser.

Academic Advisers

Upon program admission, an academic adviser is assigned to help guide your individual course selection, sequencing, and choice of research topics. For more information, see the Course Sequencing Table. (To read and print this PDF file, you will need to have the free Adobe Acrobat® Reader software installed on your computer.)

Delivery Method

The core courses in this program are delivered through the "online group" method, with a group of students progressing together through each course. Courses are offered in a time frame that is comparable to a traditional semester schedule, with fixed start and end dates. Course content and activities are available in electronic format, and access to the Web is required in order to complete this program.
