Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Family Literacy

Penn State shares your mission for improving family literacy. The 12-credit family literacy postbaccalaureate certificate curriculum was created in partnership between the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy at Penn State and the National Center for Family Literacy. This program was developed to provide educators with an opportunity to enhance their skills and credentials in the discipline of literacy instruction.

Experts in the field of family literacy come together with specialists in early childhood education and adult education to offer a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to literacy instruction.

Help Bring Literacy Home

The online certificate program in family literacy can help you:

  • support children's emerging language and literacy development
  • improve the basic academic and literacy skills of your students
  • enhance parents' knowledge and skills regarding their roles and responsibilities as their children's first teachers

To meet the wide range of needs for literary professionals, the online certificate program in family literacy has tracks in children's education, adult literacy, and parental involvement.

Recognized, Accredited, and Approved

Penn State's College of Education regularly ranks among the nation's best graduate schools, according to U.S. News & World Report, and this online program is taught by the same nationally recognized faculty.

Penn State is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). In addition, the postbaccalaureate certificate in family literacy carries the Pennsylvania State Education Association's (PSEA) Seal of Recognition, the highest level of endorsement that the association awards to graduate and professional development programs.

Penn State is an Act 48-approved provider for Pennsylvania educators, so the courses in the certificate program in family literacy count toward professional development hours.
