Graduate Certificate in Disaster Preparedness (15 credits)

Students admitted to the program are expected to complete HLS 410 and HLS 510 during the first two semesters in the program.

CORE COURSES (6 credits)
HLS 410 Public Health Preparedness for Disaster and Terrorist Emergencies I
Discusses specific threats (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear), and explores how public health professionals and first responders can prepare for and respond to threats and emergencies related to disasters and terrorism.

Public Health Preparedness for Disaster and Terrorist Emergencies II
Reviews the principles and challenges of disaster planning and coordination from a local, state, and federal perspective.

GEOSC 402Y Natural Disasters
Case studies of the causes and consequences of natural disasters; analysis of disaster impact in different economic, cultural, and social conditions.

HLS 515
Disaster Psychology
Explores the psychological impact of disasters and terrorist attacks on victims, families, rescuers, and society and the methods of reducing negative effects.
3 credits
HLS 530 Critical Infrastructure Protection of Health Care Delivery Systems
Examines the complexities involved in the protection of health care delivery systems affected during a natural disaster or terrorist attack, including the impact of disrupted transport systems, computer and Internet security, communications, energy supply, industry, and governmental institutions.
