Gary Miller is honored for his contributions to distance education

Thursday, September 9, 2004

Dr. Gary E. Miller, associate vice president for Outreach at Penn State, is the recipient of the Charles A. and Mildred B. Wedemeyer Award for Outstanding Practitioner in Distance Education. Miller received the award during the 20th annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in the application of distance education in North America for the year 2003. The University of Wisconsin and the American Journal of Distance Education established the award to honor the late Charles A. Wedemeyer, an international leader and scholar in the distance education field, and his wife Mildred Brown Wedemeyer. The award is presented annually during the University of Wisconsin's Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning.

As associate vice president for Outreach, Miller serves as executive director of Continuing and Distance Education, overseeing Penn State's World Campus and a variety of continuing education programs that serve thousands of adult learners and youth annually, including 7,056 World Campus students, more than 47,000 attendees at research-dissemination conferences and more than 28,000 youth participants in academic and sport camps.

Miller is the founding executive director of the World Campus. Launched in 1998 with funding support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the World Campus uses multiple technologies to make some of the University's most highly regarded graduate, undergraduate and continuing professional education programs available anytime, anywhere through the Web, computer interfacing and other media. In March 2004, Miller was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame.

He currently serves on the board of the American Distance Education Consortium, and he is a member of the Academic Development Board of the Worldwide Universities Network, the Board of the Sloan Consortium and the Advisory Board for the IBM Institute for Advanced Learning.
