Penn State to Offer New Online Degree Program for Nurses
Thursday, June 3, 2004
In fall 2004, Penn State's School of Nursing and College of Health and Human Development will launch an online bachelor of science in nursing degree program for registered nurses. Designed to fit into the hectic schedule of a working nurse, this convenient, flexible program will enable RNs to earn a nursing degree without neglecting work or family responsibilities.
RNs who enter the program will be eligible for 33 credits of advanced standing by portfolio verification, and all previously earned applicable credits will be accepted toward completion of the program. To meet the working nurses' need for maximum flexibility, Penn State will allow nurses to combine their online courses with traditional, face-to-face classes at Penn State's campuses throughout the state.
Pennsylvania, like much of the United States, is experiencing a crisis in the health care industry. Too many veteran nurses are reaching retirement, at a time when too few new nurses are entering the field. By providing a flexible and convenient way for nurses to reach higher levels in their profession, Penn State hopes to help Pennsylvania keep its nurses and attract more people into nursing education.
"We are very excited about the potential this program will have to reach more RNs, and give more options for them to continue their education," says Dr. Carol Smith, Associate Professor in the School of Nursing. "A special bonus is the ability students have to blend World Campus online courses with classes taught at the Penn State campuses. I think this program really gives students the best of both worlds."
Registration for enrollment in the program will open in August 2004. All currently registered nurses are eligible to enroll on either a full-time or part-time basis.
