Program Aims to Meet the Needs of Professionals Working with Families
The online Certificate in Family Literacy, offered through Penn State's World Campus, brings practitioners the expertise of literacy specialists in the fields of family literacy, early childhood education and adult education.
The Certificate in Family Literacy is now composed of three specialization tracks‹children's education, parental involvement and adult literacy‹to meet the needs of literacy professionals from a wide range of fields. "We're providing a professional development opportunity that addresses the current and emerging needs of familiesboth parents and children," said Dr. Sheila Sherow, lead faculty for the program. "The new format better defines the curriculum to meet the specific needs of each type of literacy professional."
Students in the online program learn ways to: support children's language and literacy development; enhance parents' knowledge and skills regarding their roles and responsibilities as their children's first teachers; and improve parents' basic literacy skills. The Certificate in Family Literacy was created as a partnership between the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy at Penn State and the National Center for Family Literacy.
